A Swedish King Passing Through

--:--
--:--

We carry on to the corner of Irányi utca, where a school stands. On the Váci utca side there's a large dark relief with a rider on it, and beneath it the same sentence appears twice, in Hungarian and in Swedish.

Charles XII of Sweden rested on this spot on 17 November 1714. He was coming from the Ottoman Empire, where he had lingered for years after his defeat at Poltava, and he rode incognito through half of Europe back to the Swedish town of Stralsund. A fortnight on horseback, straight across Transylvania and Hungary, with one night in the inn that once stood here on the corner. Sweden put up the relief in 1924, well over two hundred years after that single night.

We turn into Irányi utca, away from the river, and keep going until we reach Egyetem tér.
